Application Review: Design Engineering
Applicable Industries:
Aerospace, Toy Manufacturing, Medical, Sports Equipment, Automotive, Computer &
Consumer Products
Procedure:
The purpose for design engineering is simply to design a concept for function.
This process can be broken down into several phases.
The first phase deals with understanding and qualifying customer needs. This
entails setting the early goals that are to be obtained. It is here that the
project is born and begins to grow.
The second phase is the development of the concept. The concept begins to be
formed and refined. The general appearance, features and function of the concept
will be set. Changes can be made in this stage and are most likely inexpensive.
These changes often have the greatest impact on the future of the concept.
The third phase is initial design. Here is where CAD/CAM technology becomes
necessary. The sketches done here will show proof of function through creating a
prototype. The concept moves further towards becoming a product.
The fourth phase is the detailed design phase. The product becomes more complex
as it’s geometry, materials and tolerances are designed.
The fifth phase is the final step for the product before it moves on to be
manufactured. Here the product goes through rigorous testing before being
considered complete.
